AI search visibility — without the mythology

Help AI search understand when your business is a useful answer.

Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT can introduce customers to businesses and information they might otherwise miss. There is no switch that guarantees a mention, but there are sound ways to make your website easier to find, understand and trust.

01

Be accessible

Make sure search crawlers can reach, understand and index the pages containing your useful information.

02

Answer real questions

Explain the subjects customers genuinely ask about with enough clarity and substance to be useful.

03

Support your claims

Use first-hand experience, examples, named expertise and credible external evidence rather than general marketing claims.

04

Stay consistent

Keep services, locations, business details and positioning consistent across the website and trusted external profiles.

The sensible starting point

AI visibility still depends on good search foundations.

Google’s own guidance says that the familiar SEO fundamentals still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. There is no additional technical requirement, special AI markup or compulsory file that places a website in an answer.

ChatGPT search can also surface public websites, provided its search crawler can reach them. Beyond access, the practical challenge is whether the available pages give the system a sufficiently relevant and credible reason to mention or cite the business for that particular question.

This means the work is less exotic than some sales pitches suggest: technically sound pages, helpful content, clear business information, genuine expertise and evidence that can withstand a little scrutiny.

Five common questions

Why is my business missing from AI answers?

Straight answers, without pretending anybody controls the results.

Why isn’t my website appearing in AI Overviews?

Google does not show an AI Overview for every search, and no website is guaranteed inclusion when one appears. Your page must first be indexed, eligible to appear in Google Search and accessible to Google’s crawler. It then needs to provide clear, useful information that directly helps with the question being asked. Check indexing and crawl access in Search Console, make sure important information appears as ordinary page text, and strengthen weak or general content with specific explanations, first-hand evidence and accurate business details. There is no special AI schema or file that guarantees selection.

Why doesn’t ChatGPT mention my business?

ChatGPT search chooses sources according to the particular question, location and context, so a business may be relevant to one request but not another. First make sure OAI-SearchBot is not blocked by your robots.txt file or security service. Then give search systems a consistent picture of the business: clear services, genuine service areas, useful expertise, accurate contact information and independent evidence elsewhere on the web. A few vague service paragraphs and a business name repeated liberally are unlikely to do the job. Even a technically accessible and well-established business cannot be guaranteed a mention.

Why are competitors appearing in AI answers but I’m not?

The useful comparison is not simply who ranks higher. A competitor may have a page that answers the exact question more clearly, stronger project or customer evidence, better-known expertise, more consistent business information or independent references that help confirm its claims. Examine the sources actually cited in several relevant answers and identify what they contribute. Then improve the gaps in your own evidence and content rather than copying their wording. AI results change, so one test is a clue—not a final league table.

Why isn’t my content cited by AI search?

A page can be indexed without containing a passage that usefully supports an AI-generated answer. Content is easier to cite when it makes clear, attributable points; answers a recognisable question; supplies original experience or evidence; and is current, readable and easy to reach. Thin sales copy, near-duplicate location pages and broad claims without proof provide little for an answer to rely on. Improve the substance first, then check crawl access, internal links and indexing. Formatting can help readers, but it cannot rescue information that adds nothing distinctive.

Why does my website rank in Google but not appear in AI answers?

A conventional ranking is a useful foundation, not an automatic place in an AI answer. AI search may break a question into several related searches, combine information from different sources and cite a page that best supports one part of the response rather than the page holding the highest familiar ranking. Keep the SEO foundations, but also improve topical coverage, first-hand evidence, clarity and consistency across the website and trusted external profiles. Measure visibility over a set of commercially relevant questions and over time; a single search can give a misleading impression.

A practical review

Improve what can be evidenced and measured.

AI answers are variable, so the useful approach is to test a defined group of customer questions, record which sources appear and improve the weaknesses that recur.

  1. 01

Confirm that important pages can be crawled and indexed by Google and ChatGPT search.

  2. 02

Test the questions genuine customers ask, including service, location, comparison and problem-based searches.

  3. 03

Review the cited sources and identify gaps in clarity, depth, originality, trust or independent evidence.

  4. 04

Improve the strongest commercial opportunities first, then monitor changes over time rather than chasing one result.
