Local SEO for small businesses

Be easier to find when local customers are looking for what you do.

Local SEO helps Google understand what your business does, where it operates and why it deserves consideration when nearby customers search. Total Results concentrates on searches capable of becoming real enquiries—not another rankings report.

01

Be discovered

Target genuine local demand around the work people actually search for in the places the business genuinely serves.

02

Be understood

Make the offer immediately clear: what you do, who it helps and why choosing you is sensible.

03

Be trusted

Replace doubt with reviews, qualifications, project evidence, guarantees and authentic local proof.

04

Be contacted

Make telephone, email and enquiry routes obvious—particularly on mobile, where many local searches become calls.

The commercial journey

Local SEO isn’t really about maps. It’s about customers.

A prospective customer has a need, searches Google, discovers a business, checks its credibility, visits the website or profile and decides whether to make contact. Local SEO improves that whole route—not merely one pin on a map.

Rankings matter because stronger positions increase the likelihood of the right person discovering and considering the business. The useful result is not a prettier graph. It is a better chance of being found, chosen and contacted.

The local visibility system

Six parts working towards one useful outcome.

Local visibility is rarely improved by adjusting one setting. Google has to understand the business, the service and the market; customers then need enough confidence to take the next step.

01

Google Business Profile

Choose relevant categories and services, write a useful description, add good photographs and keep the business information accurate. Ongoing improvements should make the profile more complete and more helpful—not merely more active.

02

Website relevance

Use clear service pages, honest geographic relevance, descriptive titles and headings, useful copy and consistent business details so Google and customers can understand the offer.

03

Local authority

Build confidence through genuine reviews, accurate citations and business references, worthwhile links and authentic evidence that the business serves the market it claims to serve.

04

Service-area structure

Create location pages only when a distinct page has a legitimate purpose. Useful local pages answer a real customer need; mass-produced town pages usually change the postcode and very little else.

05

Local search opportunities

Use Search Console and the current search results to find queries where Google is already considering the website but it is not yet receiving enough visibility or clicks.

06

Enquiry conversion

Give local landing pages enough clarity, credibility, reassurance and obvious calls to action to turn useful visibility into telephone calls, forms and proper conversations.

Location-page production control

You probably don’t need 30 location pages.

Creating a separate page for every town within driving distance is easy. Creating pages that genuinely deserve to rank is rather harder.

A useful location page needs a legitimate commercial reason to exist and should demonstrate something meaningful about the service, the place, the customer and the business. Swapping one town name for another is not a local strategy; it is a duplication machine with delusions of grandeur.

Total Results looks first at where customers genuinely come from, what they search for and what Google is already showing before recommending additional location content.

North East authority

Local SEO from someone who understands the local market.

Total Results is based near Stanley in County Durham and was established in 2005. Clients deal directly with Martin Cooper, and the SEO is not outsourced or passed through an account-management layer.

Total Results works with businesses across Durham, Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and the wider North East. The same sound local-search principles also apply to businesses elsewhere in the UK.

Evidence before activity

Start where Google is already giving you a clue.

A page receiving substantial impressions around positions 10–20 represents a different opportunity from a search for which the website has no meaningful visibility. The first may need a focused improvement; the second may require a much larger piece of work.

  1. 01

Search Console: find commercially useful searches where Google already shows the website.

  2. 02

Current search results: examine what Google appears to reward and what the searcher is really trying to find.

  3. 03

Existing and competing pages: identify the gap in relevance, clarity, authority or usefulness.

  4. 04

Intervention: improve the highest-value constraint rather than beginning a general flurry of SEO activity.

  5. 05

Measurement: allow the evidence to show what changed and what deserves attention next.

Check my local visibility

Choose the right search route

Do you need Local SEO or broader SEO?

The answer depends on how customers choose a provider. Geography is central to some buying decisions and almost irrelevant to others.

Local SEO

For customers choosing somebody who serves their area.

Best suited to electricians, builders, therapists, garages, accountants, solicitors and other businesses whose customers commonly search for a nearby provider.

Broader SEO

For customers searching across a wider market.

More appropriate where customers can come from across the UK—or beyond—and location is not central to whether the business is a suitable choice.

What is Local SEO?

Local SEO is the work that helps a business appear when people search for a relevant service in a particular area. It includes the Google Business Profile, website pages, reviews, business information, local authority and the quality of the customer’s route from search to enquiry.

How is Local SEO different from ordinary SEO?

Local SEO gives greater weight to geographic relevance and proximity because the customer needs a provider serving a particular place. Broader SEO may target customers across the UK or beyond, where location is much less important to the buying decision.

Do I need a Google Business Profile?

For most businesses serving local customers, yes. A well-maintained profile can support visibility in Google Maps and local results, provide useful information and strengthen confidence. It still needs a clear website and credible business evidence behind it.

Do I need separate pages for every town I serve?

Usually not. A separate page is worthwhile only when there is a genuine customer, service and geographic reason for it to exist. Near-duplicate pages for every town within driving distance create volume, but not necessarily value or visibility.

How long does Local SEO take to work?

That depends on the starting position, competition, website condition and the changes required. Some profile or page improvements can be made quickly, but Google needs time to recrawl and reassess the evidence. Total Results measures progress without promising a guaranteed ranking or invented deadline.

The next useful step

How visible is your business to the customers who matter?

The Total Results Enquiry Engine™ examines whether the right prospective customers can find your website, understand the offer, trust the business and take the next step. It then identifies what deserves attention first.
